The Basics
So you're thinking about getting chickens?
You've come to the right spot. Many people start by raising full grown chickens instead of chicks for many reasons. The most obvious being you'll get eggs almost immediately, they are hardy, and they require very little maintenance. The following is a list of a few things you'll need right away to take care of your chickens.
Coop
Chickens need a safe place to roost, lay eggs, and sleep at night. Your coop doesn't need to be fancy, just make sure it's predator proof if you live in a rural area. Don't worry, if you provide the shelter, chickens will naturally know what to do with it. Need inspiration? Check out some of our Coop Designs!
Chicken Run
If your chickens aren't free range, they will need a space to walk around outside. Chickens love to dig in the dirt, sunbathe, and search for bugs. Some people make the area under their coop the run and some fence off a larger area, the choice is yours!
Food & Water
Make sure your chickens always have access to fresh water and food. You can pick up a bag of layer pellet at your local feed store and scratch as a treat. Chickens will free feed meaning they should always have access to food. Check out our Adult Feed page for more info!
